Islam in Kerala

The religion of Islam was first spread in Kerala through the people who came for trade with the east. During that period the society in Kerala was characterised by the Caste system, untouchabality and all other evils. The muslim traders who came to India during this period were real muslim who understood the true spirit of muslim culture and they practiced it in their life. Their honesty, truthfulness and the best behaviour attracted so many Keralites towards them.

It is the compulsory duty of a muslim to spread the message of Islam to the people and to the places where it has not yet reached. The muslim traders who came to Kerala understood this and they undertook the responsibility of introducing the religion of Islam to the people of Kerala.

So many people who heard their teachings and saw their noble way of living attracted towards Islam and they embraced this religion. The King of Cranganoor was attracted in the teaching of Islam. He embraced Islam and provided all the facilities to the muslim traders who came to his country.

The lower caste, who were under privileged and were faced to do all kinds of services to the upper class were really releived because of their entrance to Islam. This is because there is no class, caste or colour difference in Islam. Islam treats all equal, thus they retained their pride and prestige by embracing Islam. They got the freedom to pray, to sit and dine together. They got the freedom to marry from rich and poor family. Those people who embraced Islam understood the value of the Faith in One God and they began to shed all the local gods they have been worshipping so far. They understood the significance of monotheism.

In course of time, the people who came to Kerala were dead and the muslim suffered due to the lack of proper leadership from reputed and real muslim leaders. The people gradually began to move away from the real teachings of Islam, its culture and way of life. As a result, so many evils of polytheism like the worship of the grave, individuals - dead and alive, natural forces etc. started. So many new traditions like celebrating birthday, death anniversary, etc. which are strictly against Islam also emerged among muslims. Due to the ignorance, people began to abandon the copulsury deeds of Islam like five time prayers, fasting, zakaat, haj, etc. were forgotten and they abondoned the holy Quran and Hadith which are the true messages of Islam. They began to run behind so many unauthentic books which were written to praise great people who were dead. Gradually people began to pray through the songs and poems written in praise of them. They beleived that they can attain success and salvation in other life through these types of deeds. The leaders of the soceity and the preist tried to exploit the people who were following the blind beliefs.

During this period there were scholars in Kerala, who were really pained in the conditionof the muslim society and they wanted to revive the muslims to thier old pride and prestige. they tried for the reformation of the society on the basis of Islamic principles.

A few scholars who wished for the success of muslims - here and in the life after, undertood that it is possible only through a life based on the holy Quran and the Hadiths of prophet Muhammed (s.a.w). They invited muslims who are having similar faiths and beliefs, and formed an organisation called Kerala Jamiyathul Ulama (Organisation of Scholars) in the beginning of the 20th century. Their main aim was to advice muslims on the basis of good deeds and to object them from doing the evils deeds. The orthodox people who continued to expoit the muslims began to oppose this organisation very strictly. Later as an organisation for all the people, irrespective of scholars or not, to work for Islam was established ,i.e. Kerala Nadvathul Mujahidee (K.N.M). This organisation is now working all over kerala for the upliftment of muslims from the superstitious, blind faith, polytheism and many other evil practices which are against the true spirit of Islam. It also working for imparting religious and general education to muslims in order to refine them and to spread the message of Islam among muslims as well as non-muslims. It tries to teach muslims holy Quran and the teachings of prophet in its true and original form. It opposes all those faiths and beliefs against holy Quran and the teachings of prophet Muhammed (s.a.w). K.N.M. is also trying for the upliftment of women also.

In India, we muslims are minority; but in this secular, multi religious state we have the freedom to educate, to get emplyed or to participate in politics or government by upholding our faith in holy Quran and tradition of prophet (s.a.w).
